Gearboxes
A gearbox, or speed reducer, sits between the motor and the machine and converts the drive, reducing the rotational speed and increasing the torque available at the output. We supply worm gearboxes (RMI, VMR, UMI, VR and VR-E), helical gearboxes (AMP, AMF and WPR), flat units (PMP, PMF and WPF), bevel helical gearboxes (WSKA, OMP and OMF) and planetary gearboxes, whose EX designation is a series name rather than an explosion rating. Alongside those sit furnace gearboxes, feed gearboxes, variators, PC adapters and the accessories that mount them.
The type follows the job. Worm units are compact, quiet and economical. Helical units give high efficiency and take continuous duty. Bevel helical units turn the drive through 90 degrees. Planetary units carry the highest loads and the biggest torques, while flat units fit where mounting space is short. The same families are also supplied as gear motors with the electric motor fitted. Questions we get asked
What does a gearbox do?
It converts the drive between the motor and the machine. Depending on how it is built, it reduces the rotational speed and increases the torque at the output, so the machine gets the movement it was designed for instead of the motor speed. The gearing also decides how efficiently that happens and at what angle the drive leaves the unit.
Which gearbox type should I choose?
Worm gearboxes are compact, quiet and economical. Helical gearboxes give high efficiency and take continuous duty. A bevel helical unit turns the drive through 90 degrees, which is what you want where the motor cannot sit in line with the machine. Planetary units take the highest loads and the largest torques, and flat units are made for installations with little mounting space.
Can I buy a gearbox without the motor?
Yes. Each family is supplied on its own, and the same families are also built as gear motors with the electric motor fitted to the unit. The gear motor is the integrated version: motor and gearbox in one housing, which saves space and removes the mounting problems of two separate components. Tell us which of the two you want quoted.
What do you need to specify a gearbox?
The output speed and the torque first, because they set the type and the size. Then the character of the load: constant, variable, shock or frequent start-stop cycles. Then the mounting position, the space available and how the torque leaves the unit, by output shaft, flange or torque arm. Dust, damp and temperature affect the version and the lubrication.
