Bevel helical gearboxes

A bevel helical gearbox turns the drive, most often through 90 degrees, by combining bevel stages with helical stages. You get the efficiency of a helical unit and a right-angle layout in one compact housing, which is why these end up on so many conveyors and transport systems. Modern bevel helical units reach efficiency above 95 per cent, carry high torque for their size and take overload well.

WSKA is the efficiency-led series: wear-resistant gearing designed for continuous duty, with efficiency held in both directions of rotation and over a wide range of input speeds. OMP and OMF are the heavy duty pair, built on a one-piece casting in two-stage and three-stage versions for medium-heavy and heavy industry, with backstop, shrink disc and taper bush options and a choice of torque arm or output flange mounting.

Selection runs on torque, output speed, mounting type, sealing class (IP), cooling and lubrication, together with the duty cycle and the environment. Tell us how the shafts are oriented and how much space there is around the drive, because on a right-angle unit that often decides the configuration. We quote within one working day.

Questions we get asked

How do I choose a bevel helical gearbox?

By the working conditions, the type of drive, the rotational speed and the torque. Then by how it sits in the machine: shaft orientation, available space and the way torque passes to the next element. Send those and our technical side works through the parameters and comes back with a sized unit rather than a catalogue page.

What are the advantages of a right-angle helical unit?

High efficiency, long life and the ability to transmit high torque from a compact housing, plus quiet running and good tolerance of overload. The bevel stage changes the direction of the drive, so the motor does not have to line up with the driven shaft. That usually saves more space than the gearbox itself takes up.

Where are they used?

Heavy industry, production machines, conveyors, internal transport systems, mixers, packing lines and industrial automation drives. Inclined conveyors are a common case for the OMP and OMF series with a backstop fitted, since that stops a loaded belt running backwards when the power is cut.

Are they energy efficient?

Yes. Modern bevel helical units reach efficiency above 95 per cent, which noticeably cuts the energy a drive system uses. The WSKA series holds that efficiency across a wide range of input speeds and in both directions of rotation, so it stays efficient on reversing duties and on inverter-fed drives.
