Single-phase to three-phase inverters

A single-phase input inverter takes 230 V from an ordinary socket and produces three-phase 230 V for the motor, with speed control and soft start included: the answer for a lathe, mill, compressor, pump or gear motor on a site with single phase only. The motor must be a dual-voltage 230/400 V type wired in delta, which covers nearly all IEC motors up to 3 kW.

Questions we get asked

Can I run a 400 V motor from a single-phase inverter?

Yes if it is a dual-voltage 230/400 V motor rewired in delta, which nearly all motors up to 3 kW are. A star-only 400 V motor cannot.

Does the motor lose power at 230 V?

No. In delta at 230 V it gives its full rated power; the current is higher, which is why the drive and cable are sized for it.
