Worm gear motors
The worm gear motor puts the output at ninety degrees to the motor in the most compact package there is, with a single stage covering ratios from 7:1 to 100:1 and combined units reaching 10,000:1. The hollow output slides straight onto the driven shaft, the housing is die-cast aluminium up to size 85 and cast iron above, and the unit runs almost silently.
Built on the same worm gear units listed under gearboxes, with a standard IEC motor fitted: foot or flange, output flange options, torque arms, double output shafts and torque limiters from the accessories range.
Gear units behind these gear motors
Each series below is supplied with an IEC motor fitted; the full unit range is under worm gearboxes.
Worm gearboxes
RMI worm gearboxes
RMI worm gearboxes in sizes 28 to 250, ratios 7 to 100 per stage and 10,000 combined, torque to 2,100 Nm. We size each unit on your real load and duty.

VMR worm gearboxes
VMR worm gearboxes in sizes 30 to 150, aluminium or cast iron, with FA to FE flanges. Shafts, bushes and diameters made to drawing for an exact fit.

UMI universal worm gearboxes
UMI universal worm gearboxes mount in any position and carry a jaw coupling for overload protection. We size each worm gear reducer to your duty.

VR worm gearboxes
VR worm gearboxes have a solid input shaft and no motor interface, for handwheel or belt drive. High reduction from a compact worm gear reducer.

VR-E worm gearboxes
VR-E worm gearboxes are the E build of the VR series: solid input shaft, handwheel or belt drive, and high reduction from a compact worm gear reducer.

Questions we get asked
Are worm gear motors self-locking?
Some resist back-driving at high ratios, but it must never be relied on as a brake. If the load must be held when the power is off, specify a brake motor.
When is a worm unit the wrong choice?
On a 24-hour duty at high ratio, where the efficiency loss turns into heat and electricity. There we recommend a bevel helical or inline helical unit.
