EX planetary gearboxes
EX is a planetary gearbox range for very high torque in a small envelope. Planet gears turn around a central sun gear while meshing with a ring gear, so the load is shared between several meshes at once. That is where the power density, the torsional stiffness and the tolerance of shock and radial loads come from. EX here is the series name, not an ATEX or explosion protection rating.

Configuration is wide. Units mount on feet or through an output flange, and every mechanical size has a choice of output shaft variants. The standard motor connection is the IEC-PAM adapter, so a standard electric motor fits straight on, and adapters for hydraulic motors are available where the machine runs on a hydraulic circuit rather than a three-phase supply. That makes the series usable on mobile plant as well as fixed installations.
The EXB version adds a right-angle reduction stage. It is the one to ask about when the machine has awkward geometry, when the space is tight, or when the direction the torque is transmitted has to change. Complete drive packages are also available, with an electric motor matched to the working parameters, which saves assembly time and removes a source of error on site.
To size a planetary gear reducer we need the ratio or output speed, the torque, the running speed and the mounting arrangement. Shock loading and radial load are the two figures people most often leave out, and on this type of drive they decide the size. The series is designed for intensive use, including S1 continuous duty, and life then depends on sensible selection, oil checks and keeping an eye on the working conditions.
EX gearboxes are used on construction machinery, cranes and lifting equipment, winches, transport systems, mixers, crushers and recycling machines, in other words drives where the load varies or rises sharply. Send us the duty and the mounting arrangement and we will come back with a sized configuration within one working day.

Questions about the EX series
Does EX mean the gearbox is ATEX rated for explosive atmospheres?
No. EX is the name of the series, nothing more. It is not an ATEX marking, an explosion protection category or a zone rating, and it should not be read as one. If your installation needs certified equipment for a hazardous area, say so in your enquiry and we will tell you what can and cannot be supplied.
What mounting options are there?
Units mount on feet or through an output flange, and each mechanical size has a choice of output shaft variants, so the gearbox can usually be fitted into an existing structure without reworking it. The motor end takes a standard IEC-PAM adapter, with hydraulic motor adapters available where the drive is hydraulic.
What is the EXB version for?
EXB carries an extra right-angle reduction stage. It widens where the unit can be installed: machines with unusual geometry, tight spaces, or drives where the direction the torque is transmitted has to change. Everything else about the series, the planetary construction, the mounting options and the motor adapters, stays the same.
Can EX gearboxes run continuously?
Yes. The range is designed for intensive use, including S1 continuous duty, and is used on drives that run all day under varying load. Getting the size right is the important part: give us the shock loading and the radial load as well as the torque and speed, because on a planetary drive those set the size.
Can I buy the gearbox with a motor already fitted?
Yes. Complete drive packages are available, with the electric motor matched to the working parameters of the application. It saves assembly time and removes the risk of mismatching the two parts. Tell us the duty, and say if you want the gearbox on its own or as a complete drive, and we will quote accordingly.
