RMI worm gearboxes
RMI worm gearboxes are compact single stage worm gear reducers for drives that have to run day after day without attention. Sizes run from 28 to 250. Ratios run from 7 to 100 in a single stage, and a combined double unit takes them up to 10,000, so the output speed and torque can be set close to what the machine actually needs, with torque reaching 2,100 Nm at the top of the range. The input worm turns a worm wheel, and that right-angle arrangement is how a gearbox this small delivers a large reduction.

Housings change with size. Sizes 28 to 85 use a die-cast aluminium case, which keeps weight off light machine frames and makes the unit easier to lift into position. Sizes 110 to 250 are cast iron, for the stiffness the higher torques need. The reduction is single stage in every size, worm on the input, worm wheel on the output shaft.
Mounting is on feet or on the side flange, whichever suits the machine, and the same gearbox takes either. Output shafts are available single or double ended, and a torque arm holds the unit steady where it has to take reaction forces. Where the driven mechanism can jam, we add the overload clutch with adjustable torque, which releases before the gear set and the motor take the shock.
Sizing starts with the output speed and the torque you need at the output shaft: those two fix the ratio and the size. Tell us whether the drive runs continuously, intermittently or with frequent starts, because duty decides the size as much as steady load does. RMI units are built for S1 continuous duty. Motor power and the way torque is transmitted matter too, so peaks do not overload the unit.
Ambient temperature, dust and the chance of contact with moisture change the build and the seals we specify, so tell us where the gearbox will sit. What sizes and ratios do RMI worm gearboxes cover?
Sizes run from 28 to 250. A single stage covers ratios 7 to 100; a combined double unit reaches 10,000. Torque runs up to 2,100 Nm at the top of the range. Sizes 28 to 85 have die-cast aluminium housings and sizes 110 to 250 are cast iron. We pick the size from the output torque and speed you need, then check the ratio against the speed of the motor driving it.
Can an RMI gearbox run continuously?
Yes. RMI units are built for S1 continuous duty, including at high load, provided the size matches the application. Tell us whether the drive runs continuously, intermittently or with frequent starts, because starts work a worm gear reducer harder than steady running does. We use that, the motor power and the ambient conditions to set the size and the build.
How do I stop a jam damaging the gearbox?
Specify the overload clutch with adjustable torque. It is the recommended option wherever the risk of overload is real: the clutch releases at the torque you set, so a blocked conveyor or mixer does not pass the shock into the worm wheel, the shafts and the motor. Tell us the worst case at the output and we will set the release torque with the size.
Feet or side flange: which mounting should I choose?
Both are available on the same gearbox. Foot mounting suits standard installations where there is room around the unit. The side flange helps when the gearbox has to sit inside a machine with limited space. Settle the output shaft at the same time, single or double ended, and add a torque arm where the gearbox has to carry reaction forces.
Can I order a non-standard RMI build?
Yes. The range covers non-standard shaft dimensions, versions with a double input, anti-corrosion coatings and special seals for dirty or damp work. Tell us the ambient temperature, the dust level and whether the unit will meet moisture, and we will specify the build and the sealing along with the size and the ratio.
