Planetary gearboxes
A planetary gearbox splits the load between several planet gears turning around a central sun gear, which is what gives it high torque density, high energy efficiency, low vibration and a compact size. The even load distribution is also why a planetary gear reducer tends to run more quietly and last longer than other gearbox types in the same duty.
Our planetary range is the EX series. It is built for very high loads in a small frame, mounts on feet or through an output flange, offers several output shaft variants in each mechanical size and takes a standard IEC-PAM motor adapter or an adapter for a hydraulic motor. The EXB version adds a right-angle reduction stage. Note that EX is a series name, not an ATEX or explosion protection rating.
Units can be supplied on their own or as a complete drive package with a motor, brake, clutch or encoder, configured and ready to run. Fitting is much like any other gearbox, but the shafts have to be aligned precisely and the drive protected against overload; the documentation gives the detail and we go through it with you. Send the duty and we quote within one working day.

Questions we get asked
Does the EX name mean ATEX or explosion proof?
No. EX is simply the name of the series. It is not an ATEX marking, an explosion protection category or a zone rating. If your installation needs certified equipment for a hazardous area, tell us in the enquiry and we will confirm what can be supplied rather than letting the series name be misread.
What are planetary gearboxes best suited to?
Applications needing high torque, accuracy and compact dimensions: CNC machine tools, robotics, industrial automation, conveyor systems and transport trolleys. The construction transmits force evenly and limits backlash, which gives smooth, stable movement. The EX series also goes on construction machinery, winches, crushers and recycling plant.
Can I get one with a motor already fitted?
Yes. We supply them as standalone units or as complete drive sets with a motor, brake, clutch or encoder, configured to your working parameters and ready to run. That saves assembly time and removes a common source of error, which is why ready-made drive packages are the usual choice on new machines.
Does it need special installation?
Fitting is not very different from other gearbox types, but it does need precise alignment of the shafts and proper protection against overload. Each unit comes with mounting instructions in its documentation, and we will go through them if you want. Regular servicing, including oil checks, extends the life of the drive considerably.
How long do they last?
A correctly sized and properly used unit can run for years without failure, including in continuous duty. Quality of manufacture and the materials used are what underpin that, along with regular checks of the oil and the working conditions. Getting the size right for shock and radial loads matters more than anything else.
