Inverter drives
An inverter, also called a variable frequency drive or VFD, controls the speed of an electric motor by varying the frequency of its supply. It gives a soft start, cuts energy use by as much as 30% on the right duty, reduces the risk of mechanical damage to the driven machine and lets speed and torque follow what the process actually needs. We supply nine series from LS Electric (LG) and Eura Drives, covering 0.25 kW up to 400 kW.
Choosing one starts with the motor power and current and the supply voltage, then the application and the control mode. Scalar U/f control suits a steady load. Vector control, with or without an encoder, is what you need for high torque at low speed or a load that changes quickly. After that come EMC filtering, cooling and communications. Modbus RTU, Profibus, Profinet, EtherCAT and CANopen appear across the range, which is what lets a drive sit inside a plant automation or SCADA system.
The environment decides the rest. Drives rated IP55 or IP66 are available for dust, damp and vibration, the Eura Drives M30 for example, which has an IP66 housing and mounts straight onto the motor. Compact single-phase units such as the iC5 and iG5 cover small machines, the iG5A and E800 handle general purpose three-phase work, and the iS5, iP5A, iH5 and E2000 take the demanding end. Questions we get asked
What is an inverter and what does it do?
An inverter, or frequency converter, is the electronic unit that sets the speed of an electric motor by changing the frequency of its supply. It lets you optimise the energy the drive uses, extends the life of the motor and the machine, and gives precise control of the process instead of one fixed speed with mechanical throttling around it.
How much energy does an inverter save?
On the right duty, up to 30%. The saving comes from running the motor at the speed the process needs rather than at full speed with a valve or damper taking up the difference, so pumps and fans benefit most. A soft start also reduces the risk of mechanical damage, which shows up as less wear on the driven machine.
What do you need to know to size an inverter?
The motor power and current, the supply voltage, the type of application, the control mode you want, whether EMC filters are needed, how the drive will be cooled and what communications it has to support. Can an inverter be integrated with our PLC or SCADA?
Yes. Many of the models we supply handle industrial protocols, Modbus RTU, Profibus, Profinet, EtherCAT and CANopen among them, which is what allows a drive to be integrated with plant automation and SCADA systems. Tell us which protocol your controller uses and we will include the right interface or card in the quote.
Can an inverter work in a dusty or wet area?
Yes, with the right enclosure. Versions rated IP55 or IP66 stand up to dust, damp and vibration, which suits production halls, food plants and heavy industry. The Eura Drives M30 goes a step further with an IP66 housing that mounts on the motor, removing the control cabinet and its long screened cables from the installation.
