UMI universal worm gearboxes
UMI worm gearboxes are compact universal worm gear reducers for light and medium duty drives. The motor shaft turns a worm, the worm turns a worm wheel, and a large speed reduction comes out of a small housing. What separates the series is mounting: a UMI unit installs in any orientation, vertical, horizontal or mixed, so it fits machines that were never designed around a gearbox.

Every unit carries a jaw coupling on the motor side. It works as overload protection, limiting the damage a sudden rise in load can do to the gear set and the rest of the drive. That makes UMI a sensible choice where the driven mechanism can snatch or jam. It does not replace correct sizing: motor power and the duty classification still have to match the application.
Housings are mainly die-cast aluminium, which keeps the weight down and stands up to corrosion. The worm wheel is bronze and the worm is alloy steel, so the two run together quietly and wear in a predictable way. Accessories cover FA, FB and FC flanges, torque arms, and single or double ended output shafts, which lets the gearbox be tied into the machine in the way the geometry allows.
Sizing starts with the required torque, the output speed and the character of the work. Frequent starts and changing loads decide the size as much as the steady load does. Tell us the mounting orientation as well, because it sets the lubrication and the cooling and has to be fixed before the unit is built. Choose the flange, FA, FB or FC, to match the machine, and add a torque arm where reaction forces are carried.
Temperature, humidity and dust change the build and the sealing we specify, so describe where the gearbox will work. UMI units suit belt conveyors, feeders, gate drives and packing equipment, and they are common in automation and light industry. They take S1 continuous duty when sized to the recommended load, and non-standard shafts, mounting holes and special seals are possible in selected cases. Send the duty and the mounting position and we will quote within one working day.

Questions about the UMI series
Can a UMI gearbox be mounted in any position?
Yes, that is the point of the series: vertical, horizontal or mixed. The orientation still has to be stated before the unit is built, because it decides the lubrication and the way the gearbox sheds heat. Tell us how it sits in the machine, and we will specify the lubrication and the flange to match it.
What does the jaw coupling on a UMI gearbox do?
It sits on the motor side and acts as overload protection. When the driven mechanism jams or the load rises suddenly, the coupling limits the damage reaching the gear set and the rest of the drive. It is not a substitute for correct selection: the motor power, the duty classification and the ratio still have to suit the application.
Which flange do I need, FA, FB or FC?
It depends on the geometry of the machine the gearbox bolts to, because the flange has to suit the face it mounts against. Send us the mounting dimensions or a drawing and we will confirm which of the three fits. Add a torque arm where the gearbox has to carry reaction forces, and settle the output shaft at the same time.
What is a UMI worm gearbox made of?
The housings are mainly die-cast aluminium, which keeps the weight low and gives good corrosion resistance. The worm wheel is bronze and the worm is alloy steel, a pairing chosen for durability and quiet running. The series is aimed at light and medium duty work rather than the heaviest industrial loads.
Is a UMI gearbox suitable for continuous running?
Yes, UMI units run S1 continuous duty provided they are selected to the recommended load. Continuous duty is a heat question, so tell us the ambient temperature, the mounting orientation and how enclosed the gearbox will be. If the drive has frequent starts rather than steady running, say so, because that changes the size we pick.
