OMP and OMF bevel helical gearboxes
OMP and OMF are heavy duty bevel helical gearboxes. Bevel and helical stages combine to change the direction of the drive and to reach high ratios in a compact housing, and the range is built in two-stage and three-stage versions, which is what gives it a wide spread of output speeds. They are made for medium-heavy and heavy industry, where a drive is expected to hold its parameters through intensive use.

The housing is cast in one piece. It is stiff, it resists deformation and it carries the loads a drive sees in continuous running, and that is where most of the range's service life comes from. Sizing starts with the required output speed, the torque and the dynamic loads acting on the drive, then the choice between a two-stage and a three-stage build.
Three options change what the gearbox can do. A backstop stops uncontrolled reverse rotation and is the one to specify on inclined conveyors, where a loaded belt running backwards is a safety problem. A shrink disc gives a rigid, secure fixing and earns its place where the drive starts frequently. A taper bush connection makes servicing easier and cuts the time it takes to get the unit off, which counts when access is poor.
Mounting is either by torque arm or by output flange. A torque arm stabilises the reaction torque of the gearbox on the driven shaft. An output flange suits compact installations that need a rigid connection. Dust, humidity, vibration and extreme temperatures then decide the protection class and the material specification, so describe the site when you send the duty figures.

Questions about the OMP / OMF series
What does the backstop do and when do I need one?
It prevents uncontrolled reverse rotation. The usual case is an inclined conveyor: cut the power with a loaded belt and gravity will try to run the drive backwards, which is a safety risk and can damage the installation. If your conveyor runs up a slope, specify the backstop when you ask for the quote rather than adding it later.
Shrink disc or taper bush connection?
A shrink disc gives a rigid, secure fixing, which is what you want where the drive starts and stops frequently. An exchangeable taper bush connection is about maintenance: it makes servicing easier and cuts the time needed to take the gearbox off, which matters where access around the machine is poor. Both are options on the range.
Torque arm or output flange mounting?
A torque arm stabilises the reaction torque of the gearbox and is the common arrangement on a driven shaft. An output flange suits compact installations that need a rigid connection between the gearbox and the machine. The choice affects the loads on the unit, so it is part of the sizing rather than an afterthought.
Will OMP and OMF units cope with dirty, hot conditions?
They are built for industrial conditions, including raised temperatures, dust and shock loading, and versions with additional protection can be supplied. Vibration and extreme temperature also feed into the protection class and the material specification we quote, so describe the environment along with the torque and speed figures.
How do I pick between the two-stage and three-stage version?
By the output speed you need. Three stages give a bigger reduction from the same input speed, two stages give less. We start from the required output speed and torque, look at the dynamic loads on the drive, and then choose the configuration that puts the gearbox in its proper working range with a margin.
