iG5A general purpose inverter

The iG5A is the successor to the three-phase iG5 and a general purpose inverter for drives that need firm control rather than a basic speed setting. It uses sensorless vector control, which holds high torque and accurate speed even when the load moves about. Three-phase 400 V models cover 0.4 to 22 kW, and single-phase 230 V models cover 0.4 to 1.5 kW.

iG5A general purpose inverter from LS Electric (LG) with control keypad

Against the older iG5, the iG5A responds faster, runs more efficiently and adds functions that make the drive safer to operate. Starting torque reaches 150% at 0.5 Hz, and an optional braking resistor deals with loads that have to be stopped quickly. The case is compact enough for small control cabinets, and the keypad is laid out so programming is quick.

Control inputs cover analogue signals, digital signals and a PLC, and the drive carries built-in automation functions including PID, which is what you want where a pressure or a flow has to stay where it is set. On a retrofit the iG5A replaces older units from the series in the same mounting space, so modernising a machine does not mean rebuilding the cabinet.

We size from the motor power and rated current. Then the duty pattern: cyclic, continuous or varying load each need different parameter settings, particularly where the machine wants high torque at low speed or has to react fast to a change in load. The mounting environment is the last check. Ambient temperature, humidity and dust all shorten the life of a drive squeezed into the wrong place.

Typical duties are pumps, fans, conveyors, packing machines and centrifuges. Give us the motor rating, the supply and how the machine is controlled and we will confirm the model, with availability confirmed on the quote.

Questions about the LG / LS iG5A series

Which powers and voltages does the iG5A cover?

Three-phase 400 V models run from 0.4 to 22 kW, and single-phase 230 V models run from 0.4 to 1.5 kW. That spread takes in most general purpose drives on a production machine. Send us the motor nameplate, the supply you have available and the load type, and we will name the model that matches all three.

Can it replace an older iG5 in an existing machine?

Yes. The iG5A was designed as the successor to the three-phase iG5 and fits in the same installation space, so a modernisation does not turn into cabinet work. You gain sensorless vector control and a wider function set in the bargain. Tell us the model coming out and we will confirm the replacement before you order.

What does sensorless vector control give me?

Accurate speed and high torque without fitting an encoder to the motor. It holds torque at low speed, up to 150% at 0.5 Hz, and reacts quickly when the load changes, which a simple scalar drive does not do well. On a conveyor or a packing machine that means the drive keeps its speed when the load steps up.

Can it hold a constant pressure or flow?

Yes. PID control is built in, along with other automation functions, so the drive can take a signal from a transducer and hold a set point without a separate controller. That covers pump duties on constant pressure and fan duties on constant flow. Tell us the sensor you are using and the set point range with your enquiry.

Can it stop a load quickly?

An optional braking resistor handles loads that have to be brought to a stop fast, by absorbing the energy the motor returns as it slows. Whether you need one depends on the inertia of the load and the stopping time the machine demands. Send us both figures and we will size the resistor alongside the drive.
