iP5A fan and pump inverter

The iP5A is a vector controlled inverter designed specifically for fan and pump duties. It converts the incoming supply into a variable frequency output, so the drive holds a flow, a pressure or a load where it is wanted instead of running flat out and throttling the difference away. It was developed by LG and LS Industrial Systems for process automation where flow and pressure have to be controlled smoothly.

The vector algorithm keeps torque up at low speed, which is where fan and pump drives spend much of their life, and it keeps energy use down while it does so. Space Vector PWM, Dual PID and a sleep and wake function are built in: the drive holds a set point, drops the motor out when demand disappears, and picks it up again when demand returns.

The operator interface is a 32-character LCD or an LED display, with parameters grouped as DRV, FU1, FU2, I/O and APP, so the settings needed at commissioning sit together instead of scattered through a list. The case is compact and configuration is simple enough for a retrofit into an existing pump or fan system as well as a new installation.

Selection starts with the application, pump or fan, then the installation figures: speed, pressure, flow and how the system behaves through the day. The drive is matched to the motor power and rated current. PID control is the next decision, and it is usually the right one where pressure or flow has to stay constant.

Two practical checks remain. HVAC control cabinets often run warm, so cooling and the mounting position affect how long the drive lasts. And decide whether the installation needs dry run control, cavitation protection or overload detection before the parameters are set. Tell us the duty and we will confirm the model, with availability confirmed on the quote.

Questions about the LG / LS iP5A series

Why choose the iP5A over a general purpose inverter?

Because it was designed around fan and pump duties rather than adapted to them. The vector algorithm holds torque at low speed, where these drives run for much of the time, and Dual PID with sleep and wake is aimed squarely at holding pressure or flow. On a general purpose drive you would set all of that up yourself, if the functions were there at all.

What does Dual PID do on a pump?

PID takes a reading from a transducer, compares it with the set point and adjusts motor speed to close the gap, so pressure or flow stays put as demand moves. Dual PID gives you two control loops, which suits a system with two variables to watch. Tell us the sensors and the set points and we will cover the configuration in the quote.

What is the sleep and wake function for?

It stops the motor when demand falls away and restarts it when demand returns, instead of running the pump or fan at minimum speed for no benefit. On a system with long quiet periods that saves energy and reduces hours on the motor. The thresholds are set at commissioning to suit how your installation actually behaves.

Can the iP5A be retrofitted to an existing fan or pump?

Yes. The drive is compact and the configuration is simple, which is what makes it practical on an existing system as well as a new build. The usual questions are the motor rating, the space in the panel and how you want the set point controlled. Send those and we will confirm the model against your installation.

Where should the drive be mounted in an HVAC panel?

Somewhere it can stay cool. HVAC control cabinets often run warm, and heat is what shortens the life of an inverter, so the mounting position and the cooling arrangement are worth deciding before the drive is ordered. Send us the panel details and the ambient temperature and we will say whether the position you have in mind works.
