iG5 single-phase inverter
The iG5 is a compact, economical frequency inverter for single-phase supplies, from the LS Electric (LG) range. It controls the speed of induction motors by turning the incoming supply into a variable frequency output. The series was built as a simple, durable and flexible drive for light and medium duty work, and its small dimensions make it a sensible fit where panel space has run out.

Braking is what separates the iG5 from the rest of the family. An external braking resistor can be connected, which stops the motor quickly while keeping the drive safe. Space Vector PWM and a 32-bit DSP hold 150% starting torque at 0.5 Hz with low output distortion, so the motor pulls away cleanly under a load that changes quickly.
The keypad is straightforward, with a short parameter list, so commissioning stays a short job rather than a project. Modbus RTU is supported where the drive has to talk to a controller. Basic protective functions come as standard, and the speed control itself is smooth across the range.
Size it from the motor power and rated current first: both have to fall inside the inverter range. Because the supply is single phase, the iG5 belongs on light and medium drives. Work out the load next, steady, varying, or needing dynamic braking, and if the machine has to stop fast, plan the external braking resistor in at that point rather than after commissioning.
Control can be simple speed setting, an analogue signal, a digital signal or a small PLC. Check the mounting position too: heat, dust or damp may call for extra ventilation or a different spot in the panel. Note that the three-phase version of this series has been withdrawn and replaced by the newer iG5A. Questions about the LG / LS iG5 series
What is the difference between the iG5 and the iG5A?
The iG5 covered here is the single-phase drive. The three-phase version of the series has been withdrawn and the iG5A took its place, with sensorless vector control and a wider function set. If you are replacing a three-phase iG5 on an existing machine, the iG5A is the direct route. For single-phase light and medium duty, the iG5 still fits.
Can the iG5 stop a motor quickly?
Yes, with an external braking resistor, which is one of the reasons people choose this series. The resistor absorbs the energy the motor returns as it slows, so the machine stops fast without putting the drive at risk. Tell us how quickly the load has to stop and what its inertia is, and we will size the resistor with the drive.
How much torque does it give at low speed?
150% at 0.5 Hz, produced by Space Vector PWM and a 32-bit DSP. In practice the motor breaks away under load at very low frequency instead of stalling, and the output distortion stays low. For a load with heavy or frequent starts, send us the start pattern and we will check the rating against it before quoting.
How hard is it to set up?
The keypad has a clear menu and a short parameter list, so a straightforward speed control job is a quick set-up rather than a day in the manual. Control can be a simple speed setting, an analogue signal, a digital signal or a small PLC. Modbus RTU is there where the drive has to report to a controller.
Where should the drive be mounted?
Somewhere it can lose heat. A high ambient temperature, dust or damp all shorten the life of an inverter, so check the temperature in the panel and whether extra ventilation is needed before you choose the position.
