iC5 compact inverter
The iC5 is a compact frequency inverter with a single-phase supply, from the LS Electric (LG) range. It sets the speed of an induction motor by converting the incoming supply into a variable frequency output, so the motor turns at the speed the process needs instead of one fixed speed. It is aimed at small and medium power drives where the control job is straightforward.

The case is small enough for machines with little spare panel space. An EMC filter is built in, which cuts electromagnetic emissions and removes the need for separate EMC components in most installations. Protective functions cover motor overload, an output short circuit, overheating, phase loss and a communication fault, so the drive looks after the motor and the rest of the system with it.
Sizing starts with the motor power and rated current, both of which have to sit inside the inverter range. Then the speed range and the type of load: steady, varying or shock. The iC5 is at its best on light and medium duty, so heavy starts or high torque demands call for a margin on the rating rather than a drive picked to the nameplate.
Decide how you want to control it. A potentiometer is enough for simple speed setting, a PLC suits a machine with a wider control scheme, and digital communication suits a line tied into plant automation. Ambient temperature, dust and humidity all affect where the drive can be mounted and whether the enclosure needs help.
Typical duties are pumps, fans, conveyors, HVAC plant, gate automation and mixers, along with small industrial machines that need soft starting and controlled speed. Send us the motor rating and the duty and we will confirm the model, with availability confirmed on the quote.

Questions about the LG / LS iC5 series
What does the iC5 actually do?
It converts the incoming single-phase supply into an output of variable frequency, and that sets the speed of an induction motor. The practical results are a soft start instead of a direct-on-line jolt, a speed you can change to suit the process, and overload protection for the motor. On a small machine it does the work of a starter and a speed controller together.
Do I need a separate EMC filter?
In most installations, no. The iC5 has an EMC filter built in, which reduces the electromagnetic emissions the drive puts back into the installation and keeps extra components out of the panel. That matters on machines sensitive to interference, where a drive with no filtering would need a separate unit and the cabinet space to hold it.
Is the iC5 suitable for a heavy start?
It is designed for light and medium duty. Where the machine has a heavy start or demands high torque to break away, we allow a margin on the inverter rating instead of matching it to the motor nameplate. Tell us the load type, steady, varying or shock, and how the machine starts, and we will check the rating against it.
How is the speed set?
Three ways, depending on the machine. A potentiometer suits a simple drive where an operator dials in a speed. A PLC suits a machine with a wider control scheme. Digital communication suits a line integrated into plant automation. Say which one you want at enquiry stage, because it affects the model and the wiring you need to plan for.
What protection does it give the motor?
The protection package covers overload, a short circuit on the output, overheating, phase loss and a communication fault. Between them those cover the faults that damage a motor or leave a machine running when it should have stopped. There is also an emergency stop function, which makes the whole drive safer to work around.
